In addition to buying new police vehicles, the CBRM also sells old ones.
Between 2012 and 2019 (the period for which I could access tender information on the provincial procurement website) there were seven such sales and I was able to find information about six of them. You’ll notice the information provided varies from tender to tender — from basically everything to basically nothing.
During this period (which is actually 2013 to 2019, I found no record of a police car sale in 2012) at least 56 vehicles were put on the block. (I say at least because there’s a June 2014 tender that doesn’t say how many or what type of vehicles were sold). That represents 46% of the 120-vehicle fleet.
That these vehicles don’t fetch much when sold is not the fault of the CBRM — it’s the nature of the used car market. I also understand retired police cars can be repainted and shifted to other emergency services departments, but I have no figures on how often that happens. A couple of the tenders give the mileage on the vehicles being sold and it’s significant, as you can imagine.
